The Shaughnessy Law Firm, LLC, founded in 1998, is a public interest law firm dedicated to providing representation to litigants on a pro bono and reduced fee basis in the investigation, trial and appeal of lawsuits involving significant public issues associated with good government and best practices used in municipal governance.  In representing litigants, the Shaughnessy Law Firm, LLC focuses its resources on cases that promote increased governmental transparency - including open meetings and access to public records. 

Representative Public Interest Cases
Past cases have included lawsuits to enforce statutory rights to open meetings and access to public records under the Missouri Sunshine Law, Sec. 610.010 R.S.Mo. (2011), et seq.:
  • Lawsuits to secure public access to non-exempt governmental records under the Missouri Sunshine Law.
  • Lawsuits challenging actions taken by public governmental entities without notice or in closed session contrary to Missouri Sunshine Law.
  • Lawsuits challenging actions taken by municipalities in excess of their statutory powers,  coupled with open meeting violations, including the unlawful appointment of a police chief, unlawful attempt to impeach a mayor, unlawful tax increase for trash removal services and unlawful charges for access to land records.
Public Education and Outreach
The Shaughnessy Law Firm, LLC also regularly supports grassroot initiatives and acts as an advocate and lobbyist on issues seeking greater governmental transparency at the state, county and municipal levels.
